FOLLOW MARKET. The Fiat 124 Sport Spider was introduced in 1966. Based on a shortened Fiat 124 platform, the Sport Spider featured Pininfarina styling and was powered by a range of inline four engines, giving it nimble handling. This handling was eventually adapted for rallying purposes by Abarth, creating the Abarth 124 Rally.

In July 1970, the 1.6-liter BS1 appeared; this model is recognizable by its twin humps on the bonnet and bumper overriders. The CS series Spider arrived during 1972. Also in 1972, a sports version of the Spider debuted, required for type-approval of its rally version, and was marketed as 124 CSA (C-Spider-Abarth).
The U.S.-market 1970 Sport Spider got this 1.6-liter Twin Cam engine rated at 96 gross horsepower. The 124 Sport Spider’s British arch-rival, the MGB, got 92 horses from its primitive-but-sturdy pushrod 1.8. This car weighed just 2,085 pounds, so it had a much better power-to-weight ratio than the 1970 Ford Mustang convertible with the base
There is also a 124 Special with 1438 c.c. 70 b.h.p. engine, which is distinguished by its four headlights. This model can exceed 90 m.p.h. but has the same body as the less-expensive 124.
